Strategies to Prevent Type 2 Diabetes

Type 2 diabetes is a frightening prospect for many people. Risk factors include being overweight, having a close family member with type 2 diabetes, or having gestational diabetes (which develops during pregnancy). Not only is diabetes a dangerous disease, but it can cause other significant health issues, including stroke, heart issues, and eye and foot problems. If you haven’t been diagnosed yet, but are at risk of developing it, there are ways to prevent type 2 diabetes before it develops.

You may be able to delay or wholly reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes with certain techniques and help from your doctor. Losing a moderate amount of weight and exercising on a regular basis are the best ways to prevent type 2 diabetes before a diagnosis. Talk to your doctor about a plan to help delay or prevent this condition, including taking metformin or another diabetes drug before diabetes develops.

How Do I Reduce My Risk of Developing Type II Diabetes?

Living a healthy lifestyle greatly reduces your risk of developing type 2 diabetes. If you know you have the risk factors for prediabetes, make an appointment with your doctor and create a plan to get back on track. There are three commonly used blood tests for prediabetes which check for higher blood sugar levels than normal. While prediabetes can be treated with medication like metformin, diet and exercise are the most commonly recommended ways to reduce your risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Here are several ways to improve your health and reduce your risk of diabetes:

  • Change Your Diet- Work with your doctor or a nutritionist to make a plan that reduces your caloric intake and replaces processed foods with healthier options. Reduce your fat and carbohydrate intakes as well.
  • Increase Physical Activity- At the bare minimum, you need 30 minutes of physical activity, five days a week. Build up slowly, increasing the frequency and difficulty of your workouts.
  • Lose Weight- Combined with the above lifestyle changes, strive to lose 5-7% of your starting weight. If you weigh 200 pounds, your goal would be to lose 10-14lbs initially. It’s important to keep this weight off.

Talk to your doctor about any other changes you can make to prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes. Long-term lifestyle changes can reduce your odds of developing type 2 diabetes by 58%.
